Tomb Raider Anime: First Look at Lara Croft in Action
After two years since Netflix announced the development of a Tomb Raider anime, fans have finally been treated to a glimpse of Lara Croft in animated form.
The upcoming Tomb Raider animation will continue the story following the conclusion of the reboot trilogy. Lara has returned from her adventures in South America, where she managed to prevent an impending apocalypse. Now, she is eager for her next thrilling adventure.
Netflix’s debut trailer offers a brief but tantalizing preview. The video showcases Lara abseiling into a vast cavern and emerging dramatically against a backdrop of flames, reminiscent of a memorable moment from the game Shadow of the Tomb Raider. There is also a touching tribute to the Yamatai crew from the 2013 reboot, as Lara affectionately strokes a photo of her fallen comrades (although Alex is mysteriously absent, and Jonah is still alive).
You can watch the trailer below:
Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, as it is officially titled, features Hayley Atwell (known for her role as Peggy Carter in various Marvel projects) as the voice of Lara Croft. Earl Baylon reprises his role as Jonah Maiava from the reboot trilogy, and Allen Maldonado (known for his work in Black-ish and The Last OG) lends his voice to the tech expert character, Zip.
Although Netflix’s trailer does not provide a specific release date, it promises that Lara’s tomb raiding adventures will be arriving on the streaming service “soon.” However, the official Tomb Raider Twitter account has confirmed that the series will be released in 2024 (source).
This first look was unveiled during Netflix’s DROP 01 animation showcase, which also featured previews of the Far Cry adaptation Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix and the highly anticipated Devil May Cry series.
